Felt vs leather desk mats: what to measure before you choose

The two materials differ in glide, spill behaviour and wear, and a spec sheet tells you most of what you need, if it is honest about the material.

First, check what the listing means

"Felt" and "leather" each cover more than one material. Compare like with like.

Felt is either wool felt or synthetic felt. Wool felt, often merino, is made from wool fibres pressed and matted together. Synthetic felt is usually polyester. They look similar in photos. They do not behave the same way near heat or after a year of use. A listing that says only "felt" is leaving out the part that matters.

Leather on a desk mat at mid-range prices is almost always PU leather: a polyurethane coating over a fabric backing. "Vegan leather" usually means the same thing. Genuine leather is animal hide. It costs more, weighs more, and ages differently. None of these is wrong. But a PU mat and a hide mat are different products, and the listing should say which one you are getting.

Surface and mouse glide

PU is smooth and low in friction. A mouse moves fast across it and stops where you stop it.

Felt is textured. There is more drag, which some people prefer for fine control and others find slow.

Most optical mouse sensors track on both. Problems show up at the extremes: a very glossy PU surface, or a loose, fuzzy felt. The only reliable test is your own mouse on the mat, so check the return terms before you buy.

If you write by hand on the desk, notice the firmness. Paper on thick felt feels soft under the pen. Paper on PU feels closer to writing on the desk itself.

Spills

PU is a coated surface. Water and coffee sit on top and wipe off, as long as you get to them before they reach the edges or seams, where liquid can wick into the fabric backing.

Felt absorbs. Wool fibres resist wetting for a short time, so fast blotting helps, but coffee left on wool felt will stain. Synthetic felt absorbs too. If you eat or drink at the desk every day, weigh this first.

Wear over time

PU scratches, and the coating can crack or peel at the edges after long use, especially where it is warm or handled often. Once the surface layer goes, it cannot be repaired.

Felt pills, collects crumbs, dust and hair, and compresses where your wrists rest. A lint roller handles the surface. Compression is permanent.

Genuine leather scratches and darkens with handling. Some people buy it for exactly that. It needs occasional conditioning, per the maker's care guidance.

Heat

Neither material is a trivet. PU and polyester are plastics, and both can soften or mark under a hot mug or a hot laptop base. Wool is naturally flame resistant, a property the wool industry documents widely, and it chars rather than melts. That makes wool felt the more tolerant of the two near warm objects. It does not make it a place for a pan.

Smell

New PU mats can smell of the coating when first unrolled. Airing usually clears it. Wool felt can smell faintly of wool, more so when damp.

The numbers to check on a spec sheet

• Dimensions. Measure your keyboard width, then add the space your mouse actually travels. That total is the minimum width. Depth should take the keyboard plus room for your wrists in front of it.
• Thickness, in millimetres. Thicker is softer under the wrist, and it raises the keyboard slightly. A very thick mat also creates an edge the mouse can catch on.
• Base. Look for a non-slip backing. Some felt mats have none and slide on smooth desks.
• Weight. A heavier mat lies flat sooner. Most mats ship rolled and curl at first. Laying the mat flat with a few books on the corners for a day or two usually settles it.
• Care instructions. "Wipe clean" and "spot clean only" are different promises.
• Composition. "100% wool felt" or "PU over polyester" is a spec. "Premium material" is not.

Which one

Choose PU if spills happen, if you want a fast mouse surface, and if wipe-clean matters more than texture.

Choose wool felt if you want a softer, warmer surface, rarely eat at the desk, and accept that it will show wear where your wrists sit.

Choose genuine leather if you want a surface that changes with use and you are willing to pay for it and look after it.

Skip any listing that will not say which material you are buying.
